(Leonia, NJ) — Northern New Jersey officials are urging residents to donate to food pantries in the state because the federal government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is not fully funded because of the government shutdown. In addition we’re headed into the holiday season when many people can’t afford a basic meal.
Congressman Josh Gottheimer joined Bergen County Commissioner Tracy Zur at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Leonia November 6th to hand out food to federal workers, who have been working without pay, and SNAP recipients.
Food banks across New York State are also experiencing increased demand. The Trump Administration originally said it could only fund 50 percent of regular SNAP benefits, but that number has been revised to 65-percent. Now a federal judge is ordering the Trump administration to pay full November SNAP benefits..
You can help by donating canned and/or non-perishable food, diapers, toilet paper, water and basic necessities. Did you receive a turkey? Donate it!
