(New York, NY) – As New Yorkers head to the polls, we’re on top of the election — and will be broadcasting live with special coverage from 6:00 PM through 1:00 AM. When results come in, we’ll announce them. And 77 WABC owner-operator John Catsimatidis will be delivering instant analysis alongside Rita Cosby, Dominic Carter, former Governor David Paterson, and others.
For months, the candidates have been jockeying for position. The race including a notable stepping aside by Mayor Eric Adams, who felt he had no path toward re-election. In recent weeks, former Governor Andrew Cuomo has gained traction in the polls — as he looks to take out Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani. All the while, Republican-Independent Curtis Sliwa has stood steadfast in his refusal to step aside and endorse Cuomo, in a bid to stop Mamdani.
The 77 WABC editorial board endorsed Cuomo. President Trump has put out the call for his supporters to vote for Cuomo, saying it’s all rooted in beating Mamdani, a man the president has called “my little communist.”
Also, the race for governor is extremely tight in New Jersey. An Emerson College poll in the final days of early voting more or less pointed to a toss-up between Republican Jack Ciattarelli and Democrat Mikie Sherrill. Ciattarelli ran for governor against incumbent Phil Murphy in 2021, and Murphy is now term limited. Sherill serves in Congress.
Throughout tonight, 77 WABC will deliver on-the-ground reporting and analysis surrounding all the local races, with an eye on the race for governor in Virginia, and California’s redistricting vote.
Throughout the week leading up the Election Day, we asked you about the top issues driving voters. Over 1,000 people participated in the survey. In terms of fighting crime and empowering the police, it was a nearly universal response: 98.8% of voters consider the issue “very important.” Similarly, 96% of respondents say quality of life issues are “very important.”
Things were somewhat more muted on other issues. The vast majority (86%) do agree that policies connected to the cost of living are “very important.” Mass transit including buses, trains, and subways are considered “very important” by 71% of respondents.
We also asked about things some might consider “social issues” — women’s rights, religious freedoms, and protecting minorities. Less than half (46.5%) said the issue was “very important,” while a large portion said it wasn’t (41.55% — not important). Just over 10% said they were undecided.
