(Trenton, NJ) – Democrat Mikie Sherrill has been projected the next governor of New Jersey according to many outlets.

Entering Election Day, New Jersey’s race for governor was considered neck-and-neck. An Emerson College poll published days beforehand put Sherrill 1% ahead of Republican Jack Ciattarelli. With most polls at a 3% margin of error, Republicans hoped that their candidate could overcome the odds — with New Jersey having more registered Democrats among the voter rolls. But that proved not to be the case, with Sherrill taking the contest.

The Democratic National Committee flooded money into the New Jersey race with just about a week left to go, which some saw as reminiscent of the presidential election in 2024. At that time, the DNC poured cash into swing states such as Virginia, Georgia, and Wisconsin — to try and help Kamala Harris. That did not lead to the Democrats’ victory, as Trump took it home — including a sweep of the key swing states.

For New Jersey, Sherrill continues a long list of Democrats who have secured statewide races. Both of the state’s US Senators are Democrats. The last Republican governor was Chris Christie, from 2010-2018.

Sherrill’s campaign focused on her military career and status as a working mom. She also heavily leaned into being anti-Trump.
