(New York, NY)  —  With Halloween just around the corner, many don’t know that Halloween scary music is big business. In addition, businesses take the  Halloween holiday seriously because it’s expected to bring in 13-billion dollars in sales. And that’s music to artists’ ears.

Tomas Mier, a writer with Rolling Stone, tells the Today Show that tying music to Halloween is a smart move for musicians.  One example is Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” sees a resurgence on the charts every fall. Last year, it hit one-billion views on YouTube.

Meantime, on Spotify listeners have created seven-million Halloween-themed playlists.  One of the most popular songs is Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra.” Also, the band Florence and the Machine has a new album out called “Everybody Scream.”

Looking back, the classic song “Monster Mash,” even after more than six decades after its release, still brings in around one-million-dollars-a-year in streaming royalties and cover versions, according to Billboard.

But what makes a Halloween hit? Some listeners say it might be more of a Fall vibe, like a Taylor Swift song.
