(New York, NY) – Luigi Mangione’s legal team is looking to toss the more serious charges against the accused United Healthcare CEO killer. Meanwhile, New York’s Attorney General Letitia James, is facing a grand jury indictment for fraud. Also happening, celebrities are reacting to the passing of Hollywood icon Diane Keaton. Here are the some of the stories you need to know to start the new week:
Letitia James Indicted by Grand Jury
A federal grand jury has issued an indictment for New York’s Attorney General, Letitia James. James made headlines in her civil fraud litigation against President Trump while he was running for his second term in office. Now, James is being accused of mortgage fraud related to paperwork she signed to secure a second home in Norfolk, Virginia. US Attorney for the eastern district of Virginia, Lindsey Halligan, claimed there was proof that James lied to creditors. However, James is dismissing the charges as retaliation and claims she is innocent.


Luigi Mangione Seeking Lesser Charges
In other legal happenings, the suspect in the United Healthcare CEO murder, Luigi Mangione, is looking to have the death penalty eligible charges against him dismissed. Federal prosecutors claim Mangione stalked and killed Brian Thompson outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan. Now, Mangione’s defense team is arguing the charges do not meet the legal threshold. They also claim police never read his Miranda rights when Mangione was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania after a days-long manhunt.
Diane Keaton Passes Away at 79
Oscar-winning actress, director and producer Diane Keaton is dead at the age of 79. Multiple outlets reporting the loss, however few details are known. The family of the late Hollywood legend is asking for privacy at this time. Bette Midler, co-star from “The First Wives Club”, posted a tribute on Instagram calling Keaton “hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile”. Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Keaton in “The Godfather”, said “everything about Diane was creativity personified”. Keaton never married, but did adopt later in life. She is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke.
