Newark Airport Gets New Air Train

(Newark, NJ) — Crews are breaking ground on Port Authority’s new air train for Newark International Liberty Airport. Newark AirTrain Director Ralph D’Apuzzo says the three and a half billion-dollar investment will go towards building a two-and-a-half mile air train and three stations that will serve up to 50 thousand daily passengers and their bags and keep pace with anticipated future passenger load.

The air train will create easy connectivity to the new Terminal A and planned Terminal B. Train cars will have spacious walkways, real time signage, and comfortable seating with plenty of space for luggage. Officials say it will replace the current air train that was put in service in 1996 when the airport served fewer than 30 million passengers a year.

Officials say the new system is designed to significantly enhance reliability and expand capacity. The two-and-a-half-mile air train is at the center of Port Authority’s Newark Airport Vision plan which is a multi-phase approach up to the year 2065.

It is expected to be completed and begin passenger service in 2030.
