Democrats Are Fighting Against the Trump Coin

(Washington, DC) – Last week, the Trump Administration announced plans to put President Donald Trump’s face on a one-dollar coin. With the nation about to embark on the celebration of its 250th birthday, the coin is intended to be part of that effort.

A draft of the coin was unveiled by Treasury Department officials this week. The front side features a side profile of Trump, as well as the words “In God We Trust,” “Liberty” — and the years “1776-2026.” On the tails side, Trump is seen with a raised fist — and the words “Fight Fight Fight” are printed along the top edge. That’s a tribute to Trump’s defiant words and spirit as he rose amid the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. US Treasurer Brandon Beach also said more information about the coin will be made available when the partial government shutdown comes to and end.

Despite the cheeky graphic we posted with this story, the coin is actually silver — despite Trump’s affinity for everything gilded.

Some Democrats are predictably unhappy about the coin. Congressman Ritchie Torres of New York has said he will introduce The Restrict Ugly Money Portraits (TRUMP) Act — in a direct attempt to prohibit White House leaders from putting their face or likeness on currency.

But the Treasury Department has pushed back, noting the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 — arguing that gives authorization to mint the coins. Yet Democrats counter that the legislation does not specifically cancel out or reverse an 1866 law, which prohibits living individuals from being put on currency.
