News: Federal law enforcement in Washington D.C.
(Portland, OR) — A federal judge is temporarily blocking the Trump administration’s move to send National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon. U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut ruled that the administration had failed to present sufficient evidence of unrest, justifying federalizing and deploying guard troops. The motion stopped the deployment of up to 300 members of the California National Guard to Portland.
In her ruling, the judge warned against using military to intrude into domestic affairs considering the relatively small protests in the city. She added allowing the deployment of troops could harm Oregon’s “state sovereignty.” The restraining order applies not only to Oregon’s own National Guard, but also to efforts to bring in troops from other states into Oregon. So, this effectively pauses troop movements until further review.
