(New York, NY)  — Fares to ride New York City subways and buses are going up.  The MTA Board approved the increases Tuesday afternoon.  The fares are increasing by ten cents from two-dollars and-90-cents to three-dollars and will go into effect January 4th.  Fares last went up in 2023, when they went from 2-dollars-and-75-cents to 2-dollars-and 90-cents.  In addition, the seven-day unlimited subway and bus ride prices will increase from 34-dollars to 35-dollars, but that is down one-dollar from the initial planned increase to 36-dollars.

There will also be a four-point-four-percent increase on Long Island Railroad and Metro-North tickets. Meantime, the MTA plans to sell its final MetroCard on December 31st, as the system transitions to the OMNY tap and pay system.  You’ll still be able to use a MetroCard after that, but officials are encouraging riders to start using the OMNY cards.  Also, buses will no longer accept cash or coins, just the OMNY system.
