Golf’s Best (And Rowdy Fans) Show Out for Ryder Cup

(Old Bethpage, NY) —  Bethpage Black Golf Course on Long Island just hosted one of golf’s premiere team events; The Ryder Cup.  Keegan Bradley, the captain of Team USA said the course is special even though it’s one of the toughest in the world. Bradley called it a “dream come true” to play Bethpage and reminds everyone the course is so difficult there’s a warning sign on the first hole.

That difficulty held true for the Americans. Unfortunately, Europe retained the cup this year.

President Trump attended along with his granddaughter Kai Trump.

New York State Police in Nassau County geared up to secure the Ryder Cup one week ahead of tee off. Troopers undertook a massive security operation designed to ensure the safety of the Bethpage golf course and park, along with its 50,000 daily spectators.

The event is also a financial windfall for Long Island. Estimates are the tournament generated more than $200 million in economic impact, driven by direct spending from ticket sales, corporate hospitality, and merchandising, along with tourism and increased spending in hospitality and transportation sectors.

While players don’t receive a traditional prize purse, they receive stipends and allocations for charity, and profits from broadcast rights and sponsorships flow to the PGA of America and the European Tour’s parent organization.

Safety was a big focus as well, especially given the president’s planned attendance. Canines swept the golf course for explosives each day, plainclothes officers were in the crowds, and intelligence units scrubbed social media for any potential threats. Several road closures caused a few headaches, and visitors were advised bags will be screened. Only small bags were allowed inside the course.

The weather caused some concern ahead of the tournament, which officially started with Wednesday’s opening ceremonies – moved up due to last week’s rainy forecast.
