(New York, NY) – It’s not everyday New York City authorizes spending half-a-million dollars on cats. And we’re not talking about saving bodega cats. This is an effort aimed at reducing the city’s cat population.

Say what?! Curtis Sliwa is going to freak out!

The New York City Council recently approved a pilot program that aims to lower the Big Apple’s cat population over time. It involves spaying and neutering as many felines as possible, so as to cut down on the feral cats that some say are too prevalent in New York. Of course, suffice it to say that Curtis and Nancy Sliwa don’t see the issue the same way.

Curtis has discussed plans to turn Gracie Mansion into an animal shelter is he wins the mayor’s race. He’s also said feral cat populations can be repurposed as built-in rat catchers and killers, amid the city’s ongoing war with rodents.

With some convinced the cats are overpopulated and thus a problem, the $500,000 will go toward Flatbush Cats — a non-for-profit in Brooklyn. In all, rescue, trap-neuter-return volunteers will be utilized. The goal is to spay or neuter 3,500 cats.
