(Washington D.C.) – On Tuesday, the House Government Oversight subcommittee held a hearing on the recent sightings of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), or the official military term for UFOs. While there was little talk of possible extra-terrestrial life out in the universe, the focus was mainly on international security, developments in weapons technology and forces from our own planet.

What Was This Hearing?

The September 9th hearing was the third Congressional hearing on UFOs since July 2023, when a witness testimony revived the public interest in the aerial phenomenon. Back in February, Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) established the House task force, “Declassification of Federal Secrets” under the Oversight committee, separate from another subcommittee that held the second hearing on UFOs in November 2024.

Who Spoke

Four eyewitnesses testified before the committee, including three Armed Forces veterans and one investigative journalist who has covered the topic at length. One of the veteran witnesses made a point to highlight the fact many in the military are wary to report any UAPs due to fear of repercussions. George Knapp, the journalist, was asked by Congressman Nick Begic (R-AK) what “the long game” is on the topic and Knapp said the public has a right to transparency and argued that some in leadership believe the public is unable to “handle” the truth.

Lawmakers Pushing for Answers

One of the outspoken lawmakers at the hearing was Representative Eric Burlison, a Republican from Missouri, who says he has routinely been stonewalled in his attempts to get answers. Burlison shared a video depicting an unidentified object being targeted with a Hellfire missile, only to be unaffected. Burlison did mention there could be reasonable explanations for the video, such as AI manipulation or it could simply be a balloon. However, Burlison believes there are people within congressional leadership trying to keep a lid on this topic and preventing full transparency.

Military Debunks Alien Fears

Over at the Pentagon, there is an established department to investigate these UAP sightings by military personnel, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). There have been declassified reports explaining some of the instances, however there are still older unexplained incidents. None of the unexplained instances showed any type of evidence of extra-terrestrial interference and the Pentagon maintains there is simply a lack in technology for analyzing older UAP reports.
