Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani leads Labor Day march
(New York, NY) — It was another wild week in the campaign for mayor here in New York. President Trump told Mayor Adams and Republican nominee, Curtis Sliwa they had ten days to get out of the race. Independent candidate, Andrew Cuomo continued to deny having campaign strategy talks with the White House, and was a job as ambassador to Saudi Arabia dangled before one candidate’s eyes?

On Monday, Mayor Adams stepped off the campaign trail and took a trip to Florida. City Hall said he was celebrating his 65th birthday there, but the “New York Times” reported Adams was in Florida to meet with with White House advisor, Steve Witkoff. The paper said President Trump was offering the mayor a job as ambassador to Saudi Arabia in return for Adams dropping out of the race. By Friday the deal seemed to have fallen apart, and Adams called a last minute press conference to tell a gaggle of reporters that he was staying in the race for mayor till the end, win or lose. President Trump mentioned the mayor’s race Friday in a oval office interaction with reporters, saying “I would say that (Andrew) Cuomo might have a chance of winning if it was a one-on-one. If it’s not one-on-one, it’s going to be a hard race,”

Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa scoffed at President Trump’s call for him to drop out in a bid to help Andrew Cuomo beat mayoral front runner, Zohran Mamdani. He told Sid Rosenberg, on 77WABC’s “Sid and Friends in Morning” that he has a good shot of winning the race for mayor, and he refuses to let down all the New Yorkers who have supported his campaign. He again told Sid, “the only way I will exit this race is in a pine box”. The 71-year-old says no one has contacted him about a job in the Trump administration, and there was no way he would take one. Sliwa has raised millions in matching funds and his numbers continue to climb in mayoral polls.

The Times also reported this week that President Trump and Andrew Cuomo have spoken numerous times by phone about the race for mayor, something which Cuomo continued to deny this week. The former governor says he has not solicited the president’s help and does not want his endorsement. Adams, Sliwa, and Mamdani have also made it clear they do not want the White House involved in their campaigns.

In fact, Front runner Zohran Mamdani hammered President Trump hard for sticking his nose into the race for mayor. During a weekend rally in Brooklyn with Senator Bernie Sanders, Mamdani told supporters “We cannot try to convince ourselves that because something is illegal, Donald Trump will not do it,” He told the crowd that he worries the President will try to send the National Guard in if he wins in November.

Election polls continue to show Mamdani with a huge lead over his three rivals. The 33-year-old Democratic Socialist has anywhere from a 12 to 19 point lead over Andrew Cuomo, who comes in second in all of the surveys of voters. Curtis Sliwa is in third place and Mayor Eric Adams trails badly back in fourth place.
