(New York, NY)  — There’s a new sound at New York City Subway stations.  In addition to hearing, ” If you see something, say something” or “Stand clear of the closing doors,” you’ll be hearing 24 poetic announcements over the subway loudspeakers.  The messages will be delivered in six languages, which are meant to gently interrupt daily life.  The project wants to remind you, “If you hear something, free something.”  The project is by conceptual artist and longtime New Yorker Chloe Bass.  It will be broadcast over public address systems in 14 subway stations citywide, including Grand Central, Union Square, Atlantic–Barclays and Court Square.

Bass tells Gothamist, “These announcements ask you to consider the space around you, the people around you, and your own emotional state a little bit differently.”  She added, “It’s my hope that this project actually gives people back a little bit of their interior life in public space.”
