(New York, NY) – This time of year, students head back to campus. Freshmen are navigating the realities of life away from home — including what it’s like to live in the dorm. New roommates are figuring out each other’s idiosyncrasies. And many are realizing — darn it! — they forgot some needed items.
Not to worry! At New York University, school administrators have come up with a great idea. It follows the concept of, “one person’s trash — is another person’s treasure.” The NYU Swap Shop opened last weekend. Hundreds of students showed up to shop. Basically, the stuff on the shelves is old stuff that was left behind.

When dorms are cleaned out each spring, staff gather gently used items that may come in handy for the next generation of students. Apparently, books and microwaves are the most popular items. Thousands of items make their way from dorms to the “swap shop” every academic year.
