(New York, NY) – The NYPD appears to be coming out of a hiring crisis. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch swore in nearly 11-hundred recruits August 20th, the most of any class to enter the police academy since 2016. Tisch says the department is on pace to beat a record set in 1984 with the most officers hired in a single year.
Tisch says the department is on pace to beat a record set in 1984 with the most officers hired in a single year. She says the numbers mean policing is being rebuilt and the years of bashing the police are behind.
Back in February, the NYPD made some changes to help with recruiting, including lowering the required college credit minimum to enter the police academy and a renewed focus on officer physical fitness.
The diverse class, representing 34 languages and 25% foreign-born recruits, will undergo six months of training under reinstated fitness standards before becoming officers.
