Rip Tide Warning for Swimmers

syndication-wilmington-news-journal-50

(New York, NY) — There’s a new warning about rip currents following two separate drownings Monday (August 11, 2025)  in New York City and on the Jersey Shore.

77 year old mother and grandmother Liudmila Marchenko died after being pulled from the water off Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn at about 6:30 after lifeguards had gone home for the evening. She was visiting her daughter in Brooklyn from Russia and was supposed to visit for a month but died two weeks into her trip.

A 31-year-old man in the water with his kids died after getting caught in rip current at a Seaside Heights beach in New Jersey on Monday but four others survived after getting caught up in a rip current, again after lifeguards were off-duty.

Last weekend, there were about a dozen rip current rescues at unguarded beaches in the region. People are being reminded not to swim unless lifeguards are there. Swimming is prohibited at city beaches except for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during summer months when lifeguards are on duty.

The National Weather Services says if you are caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore and then once you are out of the rip current, swim to the shore.
