(Bronx, NY) — Legendary New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera needs surgery after tearing his Achilles during the Old-Timers game at Yankee Stadium over the weekend.
The 55-year-old Hall of Famer suffered the injury while going after a Willie Randolph fly ball to center field. Earlier, at his only at-bat, Rivera hit a single off of pitcher Andy Petitte and easily made it to first base.
His agent said he’ll have the surgery in the coming week. Rivera spent his entire 19-year career with the Yankees and dominated relief pitching with 652 career saves, the most in baseball history, and is considered by many to be the greatest reliever of all time.
