After Shooting, How Do We Keep Offices Safe?

syndication-westchester-91

(New York, NY) — The investigation into the deadly shooting at a Manhattan office building continues as workplace safety becomes a concern. Mayor Eric Adams said the building at 345 Park Avenue has several safety features that could not be put into effect — because the security guard was killed when a gunman opened fire on the evening of July 28th — killing four people before killing himself.

Brian Higgins, founder of Group 77, a security company based in Mahwah, New Jersey, is among those trying to handle a barrage of phone calls. “How can we prevent something like this?” he said when speaking to the Associated Press. Higgins explains most companies run out to buy the latest technology and high tech cameras. But, he cautioned, that’s only only effective if those cameras are consistently maintained and monitored.

John Torres, of Guidepost Solutions Security in Manhattan, says there’s now software that could’ve detected the shooter while he was still outside. It’s similar to AI detection that works with a company’s existing security cameras. The next step is to give more people not working at the front desk the ability to stop and control elevators.

The day after the shooting, Goldman Sachs had a team of police officers and security guards at the entrance and inside of its Manhattan headquarters. The New York Times reports new and existing customers are asking for price quotes to change their security systems — and for meetings to discuss implementing layered access controls on floors in buildings.

Several companies inside the building at 345 Park Avenue remain closed, including Blackstone, which is reviewing its security measures after a company executive died. NFL offices won’t reopen until at least August 8th.
