(New York, NY) – Injuries — or more accurately, praying they don’t occur — are a fact of life during NFL training camp. And with the heat and humidity turned up, as well as the intensity at practice, people are bound to get hurt. That was certainly true last week when Justin Fields dislocated his toe.
The concern was palpable immediately, as Fields was able to walk off the field under his own power — but had to be carted off. He’d suffered a dislocated toe. Today, Fields addressed the media and said “God was with him,” that day — adding he’s very thankful it wasn’t a more serious issue. Fields will wear a protective plastic cap on his shoes for a few weeks to provide extra protection.
As for the Giants, the team kicked off padded practices this week at their training facility in East Rutherford. The injury scare for Big Blue involved standout second-year WR Malik Nabers. He left practice after falling on his shoulder while blocking. A source told ESPN he’s believed to be “OK,” which means a big sigh of relief for the Giants.
The team re-signed wide receiver and return specialist Gunner Olszewski. He replaces Bryce Ford-Wheaton, who was placed on injured reserve with a torn Achilles.
Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. continues to lead the charge from the backfield. But rookie Cam Skattebo is turning heads with his physical running style and pass-catching ability. Head coach Brian Daboll praised the young back, drafted out of Arizona State University.
“He gets his pads down, runs hard,” Daboll observed.
Skattebo not yet in the first-team rotation, but his versatility is earning him a closer look. Reports from practice have praised his pass-catching ability.
