(New York, NY) — New York City is upgrading the drones used to respond to fires.
The FDNY has been using drones since 2017, but Deputy Mayor of Public Safety Kaz Daughtry says new drones will be fixed atop of firehouses and autonomously fly to a fire while firefighters are on their way to the scene. Daughtry says it allows the lieutenant to assess the scene from the top and inform their team about how they will respond to the blaze.
The FDNY will spend this week testing different drone platforms to see if they work in New York City, with Daughtry saying if it works here officials will be satisfied that it will work anywhere.
