(Costa Rica) – Officials say Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, died drowning while swimming with his eight-year-old daughter off the coast of Costa Rica.

The 54-year-old actor was caught in a rip current near Playa Cocles. Surfers rescued his daughter, and a volunteer lifeguard pulled Warner to shore. After 45 minutes of CPR, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man who tried to help was hospitalized but later released. No lifeguards were on duty at the beach due to recent staffing shifts, authorities said.

Warner earned an Emmy nomination in 1986 and had a decades-long career in television, film and music. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
