Drones Help To Stop Subway Surfing

(New York, NY)  —  New York City officials say using drones to help spot subway surfing is working.  Due to social media, subway surfing has grown in recent years with 16 people dying as a result since 2022. In addition, others have gotten seriously hurt. Mayor Eric Adams say due to use of drones, officials have been able to spot and take some 200 subway surfers off the tops of trains.  Mayor Adams said, “Drones are saving lives — from our beaches to our subways — and helping keep New York the safest big city in America.” He added,  “Subway surfing isn’t a game. It’s deadly, and it’s putting our youth at risk…Riding outside a train is not only dangerous, but it is also a crime, and there is zero tolerance for it.”

The program which was launched in 2023, has drones equipped with long-range zoom cameras that help the NYPD with its live aerial surveillance of trains.  Meantime, a judge has given the green light to a mother in Manhattan to sue TikTok and Instagram after her son was killed in a subway surfing incident.
