(New York, NY) – Despite President Trump calling the story “boring” and a “hoax”, the discussion around the Jeffrey Epstein case continues to dominate the news cycle. There’s a new poll in NYC’s mayoral race and we are learning more from the frontlines of the Russia-Ukraine war, as Trump threatens tariffs if there is no ceasefire soon. Here are your top 5 stories this Saturday:
Epstein Files May Get Released
The justice department is making moves to unseal the court files at the center of a weeks-long controversy. Headlines have been focused on the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, and previous promises of a “client list” from the disgraced financier. Back in February, Attorney General Pam Bondi said her office would soon start releasing names tied to the investigation. However, the government walked back their statements and said such a list does not exist. Now, in yet another reversal, the justice department is filing to release grand jury testimony relevant to the case. The process of unsealing the files could take months if approved by a judge.
A Three-Way Tie for Mayor
The latest poll from the city’s mayor race shows a statistical three-way tie. According to numbers from Harris X, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani has a slight lead of 26%, Former Governor Andrew Cuomo sits at 23% and Republican Curtis Sliwa earned 22% in a potential 4-way race. Sitting Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an Independent, trailed behind the top 3 candidates with only 13% of the vote. Businessman Jim Walden was not included in the survey. The polling firm, Harris X, has previously gotten the numbers wrong in the Democratic mayoral primary. All of the top 3 candidates fell within the margin of error, meaning the race is anyone’s game.
Trump Gives Russia Ceasefire Deadline
The war between Russia and Ukraine drags on, and now President Trump says Russia will be paying for it if there is no peace in the region. Trump announced a 50-day deadline this past Monday if Russia did not commit to long-lasting peace with their neighbor. Trump said Russia will face secondary tariffs of 100% if there was no progress towards peace. Experts believe the move is meant to pressure Russian allies in the BRICS coalition like Brazil and China, who would in turn urge Russia to back down from its goal of annexing Ukraine.
Senate Judiciary Drama
This past week, Senate Democrats put on quite the show by walking out of a confirmation hearing for Emil Bove. President Trump has nominated the senior Justice Department official to become a federal judge. Bove’s nomination was eventually pushed through along party lines after the Democrats made their dramatic exit from the chamber. Bove has been accused by a whistleblower from the DOJ of telling employees to ignore court orders which go against President Trump’s immigration agenda. If confirmed by the entire Senate, Bove will serve a lifetime appointment.
Governor Hochul Goes After BBB
Governor Kathy Hochul held an event on Friday in Kingston with Congressman Pat Ryan, largely decrying the massive tax and spending package known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Hochul says the impact of the bill will be devastating to the Empire State, with losses in healthcare funds alone totaling $13 billion annually. The bill was part of the White House’s goal to gut out any waste or fraud within the federal government. The bill passed in the beginning of the month by just 4 votes.
