(New York, NY) — New York City’s Department of Transportation is getting feedback over Mayor Eric Adams’ proposed 15 mile per hour speed limit for e-bikes and e-scooters.
Many voiced their support during an online public hearing today, saying many e-bike riders are going all over the place, going too fast and the wrong direction. However, they say it won’t mean much without requiring them to have license plates and registration so cameras can enforce the measure.
Critics, meanwhile, argue going a little bit faster will help e-bike and e-scooter riders be safer because they can keep up with the flow of traffic on streets that lack protected bike lanes and they say most e-bikes don’t have functioning speedometers.
The measure is still under consideration.
