(New York, NY) — Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce soon that he will run as an Independent candidate for mayor this Fall. He is expected to let his intentions be known as soon as this week. The 67-year-old will also reportedly ask all the candidates trying to beat Democratic nominee, Zohran Mamdani to promise to leave the race in mid-September if they are not doing well in the polls. He would include himself in that pledge.
Mayor Adams was quick to respond to Cuomo’s request. He said “Let’s not forget the damage he caused as governor. Cuomo led the charge on a flawed bail reform. He failed New York’s most vulnerable during COVID. Now, Cuomo is wasting time and dividing voters. He failed then – and he’s failing New Yorkers now,”
Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa also released a statement similar to Adams. “Andrew Cuomo lost his primary and hides in the Hamptons. Eric Adams skipped his and fled to Fort Lauderdale. I’m the only candidate with a majority party nomination, a 50-year record of serving New Yorkers, and a real path to victory,”
Political consultant, Hank Sheinkopf believes the 33-year-old Mamdani will easily win the November election if he faces off against Cuomo, Adams and Sliwa. He thinks Mamadani’s competition should rally behind one candidate.
So far, every poll finds Mamdani with big leads over the others in the race for Mayor.
