(New York, NY) – World leaders are being cautious with their response to tariffs being rolled out by the White House after they were paused for months. Most countries want to maintain a good standing with the US as negotiations continue to strike new trade deals. An honors-level college student is choosing deportation over a legal battle out on Long Island. Here’s the top stories you need to know this Saturday:
Trump Tariffs Make Comeback
President Donald Trump is committed to his foreign and fiscal policy regarding tariffs. Trump maintains that countries importing goods to the US are not paying their fair share and hurt American manufacturing. Tariffs were first announced to go into effect on April 2nd, the day Trump named “Liberation Day”. However, following turmoil on Wall St, the tariffs were paused for 90 days as the White House aimed to make deals with each trading partner. Early Saturday, Trump announced a blanket 30% tariff rate on the European Union and Mexico. The President warned against any retaliatory tariffs as well.
LI Student Will Be Deported
Teachers and family members are wondering why 20-year-old Sara Lopez Garcia was arrested and detained by ICE. Currently being held in a South Louisiana Processing Center, Lopez Garcia says she would rather be deported than go through a legal battle from behind bars. She is an honors student at Suffolk Community College. The case has even raised questions for Trump-allied republicans like Congressman Andrew Garbarino, who said he has been in contact with the White House.

Dozens of officers are being forced out of their jobs after allegedly failing to meet department standards in recruiting. It centers around one inspector, Terrell Anderson, who the department claims let people into the academy despite issues like previous arrests, convictions and times they were fired from previous jobs. On Thursday, a Manhattan judge put the firings of the officers on hold and said they should not lose their jobs due to the actions of Anderson. Another hearing for the case is set for this coming Tuesday.
Trump Visits Flood Zone
President Donald Trump paid a visit to Texas this Friday, following devastating floods that swept through the Hill Country region. Trump met with the families of children who were at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp. The camp sat on the bank of the Guadalupe River, which rose 26 feet in under an hour following buckets of rain. Trump pushed back against a reporter who asked about alert timeliness, and said this has never happened before in the past. Trump was joined by First Lady Melania who said she was praying for the families affected. Nearly 130 people have died and 160 people are still missing.
Biden’s Doctor Pleas the Fifth
Physician Kevin O’Connor took the stand this week in a congressional probe into the Biden White House. The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led by Kentucky Republican James Comer, launched an investigation into what Comer claims was a massive cover-up of Biden’s ailing physical and mental health. Dr. O’Connor served as the former president’s physician and did not answer any of the questions during his congressional testimony. Comer says the silence was an admission of guilt itself.
