(Kerrville, Texas)  —  Over 170 people are still missing after the deadly devastating floods in Texas. Among the missing are five campers and a counselor from Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp along the Guadalupe River that was washed away.  According to volunteers with the emergency response, the search and rescue operations are turning into a recovery mission.  The death toll stands at at least 120.

The big questions now are why wasn’t a better warning system in place and should more have been done to warn people of the rising waters?  NBC News reports county documents show local officials knew about the possible flooding issue for decades.  Records from a county meeting in 2016 show a former commissioner said the flood warning system was “quite simply antiquated” and called it “marginal at the best.”  Currently, officials say there are laser focused on search efforts.

The flooding out west has struck a chord here in the tri-state area.  New York Governor Kathy Hochul said New York State Police canine teams are being deployed to Texas for flood recovery.  In addition, people in Connecticut are coming together to help.  Mike’s Deli in Norwalk, along with Forever Sweet Bakery and a local Dunkin’ have started taking collections which include bottled water, toiletries, diapers and wipes. A Budget truck franchise is also providing transportation, as is Americares in Stamford.

Officials say beware of charity scams and crowdfunding efforts.  They add it’s better to stick with organizations that have experience such as the Red Cross, United Way and the Salvation Army.
