Khalil Wants $20 Million

syndication-usa-today-451

(New York, NY) — Pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil is filing a 20-million-dollar false imprisonment claim against the Trump Administration.

The claim, which is a precursor to a lawsuit, names the Department of Homeland Security, ICE and the State Department. Khalil, a Columbia University graduate who helped organize pro-Palestinian protests at the Ivy League New York school, was arrested by ICE agents last March and held at a Louisiana detention center for 104 days. The court ordered his release after determining the government’s efforts to detain him based on foreign policy grounds were likely unconstitutional. Khalil is a legal U.S. permanent resident.

He claims he was “falsely imprisoned, maliciously prosecuted and smeared as an antisemite” as the government sought to deport him over his prominent role in campus protests.

Khalil said he plans to share any settlement money with others targeted in Trump’s “failed” effort to suppress pro-Palestinian speech. In lieu of a settlement, he would also accept an official apology and changes to the administration’s deportation policies.
