(New York, NY) — Democratic nominee for New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani is getting a big endorsement from the city’s largest teachers union.
The United Federation of Teachers says the Democratic socialist will preserve educators’ jobs and shield public education from attacks by the Trump administration. While meeting with Mamdani Wednesday morning, UFT President Michael Mulgrew said they’re looking forward to having a real partnership with someone in City Hall who truly supports the school system.
After being unable to pick a preferred candidate in the primary, Union President Michael Mulgrew told reporters their choice was between Mamdani and current Mayor Eric Adams, despite previously calling Adams a “hostage to the Trump Administration”. He added that retirees in the city’s largest teachers’ union largely backed Andrew Cuomo in an internal poll, while most active UFT members supported Mamdani.
Mamdani said he looks forward to working with the union to fully fund the city’s schools. He also responded to President Trump’s threat of a federal takeover if he’s elected mayor, saying Trump has no respect for Democracy.
