(New York, NY) — The number of people dying in traffic accidents in New York City is way down. According to officials, traffic-related fatalities are down 32-percent in the first six months of 2025, compared to the same time last year. New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner YDanis Rodriguez says the historic low is due to the redesign of intersections, more enforcement of traffic laws, having more pedestrian spaces and an increase in bike lanes. For the first half of this year, there were 87 traffic deaths, which ties with 2018 for the fewest ever. He adds, this is despite having more cars on our streets than ever before and despite cars being bigger and heavier than ever before.
