Long Islanders worried after shark attack

(Jones Beach, NY) — Beach goers on Long Island are looking around as they go in the ocean after a woman was bitten by a shark at Jones Beach last week. State Park workers say a 20-year-old woman was wading in the water at Central Mall beachfront last Wednesday, when she felt something sharp on her feet and leg. They believe it was a sand shark that chomped on the woman. Lifeguards raced to help her. She was rushed to the hospital by EMTs and is okay.

Some on Long Island say that shark bite is enough to keep them out of the water for the rest of the season.

State Park leaders say they are constantly scanning the ocean from the shoreline and in drones above the water, for any lurking danger. They say they will continue to do so all summer long. The State Department of Environmental Conservation says those looking to enjoy their time the beach and avoid sharks should follow the rules below.

Avoid areas with seals, schools of fish, splashing fish, or diving seabirds.

Avoid swimming at dusk, night, and dawn.

Avoid murky water.

Swim, paddle, and surf in groups.

Stay close to shore, where your feet can touch the bottom.
