(New York, NY) — A heatwave hit the New York metro area earlier than usual this past week. On June 24th, the thermometer hit 99-degrees in New York City, making it the hottest June 24th since records started in 1869. The temperature broke the record for the date set back in 1888. In addition, JFK Airport also broke a record of 102-degrees. Meantime, this is the second year in a row that extreme heat has hit our area earlier than normal.

On Monday, June 23rd. Governor Hochul declared a state of emergency for 32-counties across the state, including New York City. One restaurant in the Catskill region, which normally has cooler weather, shut its doors due to the high temperatures. The owners didn’t want their employees to work alongside hot indoor ovens.
According to the New York Times, New York City opened nearly 600 cooling centers because officials were concerned about the heat being “brutal and dangerous.” The city does have a “Cool Options Map” or residents can call 311 to find their nearest location. 77 WABC Radio Host Lionel talked about the oppressive weather.
The Heat Wave Breaks….
A cool down came Thursday June 26th, as temperatures dropped into the low 70s.
So what broke the heat dome? According to National Weather Service meteorologist James Tommassini a cold front moved through the area with a cooler and drier air mass behind it. That cold front helped to lower temperatures and humidity. It also gave the area the chance of showers and thunderstorms.

So what can you do to stay cool, when another heatwave hits. Experts say drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioning and limit your activities outside. Another risk are heat-related illnesses and call 911 if you need immediate help. Also, remember you’re not the only one who can overheat. So can your pets. Make sure they stay cool and have plenty of water.
