Iran Launches Strike on US Military Base in Qatar

syndication-the-abilene-reporter-news-14

(Qatar) – Iran has launched an airstrike on a US military base in Qatar. This follows the dropping of bombs on Iranian nuclear sites — from US planes — over the weekend.

Qatar says it has knocked out the Iranian missiles headed toward Al Udeid Air Base. And Qatar government officials reported there are no casualties — and it reserves the right to respond to Iran. The New York Times says Iran warned Qatar about the attack, so this may be the end of the immediate aggression. Iranian State TV says the country launched the same number of missiles against the base that the US launched against its nuclear facilities. Several reports say Iran has also targeted other US bases in the Middle East.

Earlier Monday, the airspace over Qatar was closed in anticipation of this attack. Also, the US Embassy in Qatar had ordered all Americans to shelter in place.

This is all part of escalating geopolitical tension in the Middle East, which touched off most recently with an Israeli airstrike on Iran in what was dubbed Operation Rising Lion. Then, on Saturday night, the US military launched Operation Midnight Hammer — which included seven B-2 Spirit bombers, 125 total aircraft, and more than 75 precision-guided weapons. President Trump dubbed the attack a success and said Iran’s nuclear sites sustained significant damage.

Opinions differed immediately after the US joined in the effort and launched the Saturday attack. Some Democrats, including New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, immediately criticized the attack as unconstitutional. Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania praised it, in keeping with his strong pro-Israel stance. Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson praised the attack and Trump’s leadership throughout. The overarching concern for many is that the conflict could spiral into something larger, bringing in various nations an interests — some suggesting it could mean WWIII.
