(New York, NY) – Severe thunderstorms swept through New York City and New Jersey at the end of last week, bringing damaging wind gusts up to 78 mph, heavy rain, hail, and even brief tornadoes. The storms downed trees, power lines, and utility poles—many crashing into homes, and streets. There were major power outages and blocked roads.
Tragically, several people were killed, including two in Connecticut and two in New York, while at least one person was injured by falling debris in Manhattan.
The storms also caused travel disruptions, including rail service at Grand Central, delays at area airports, and road flooding. Schools were closed in some areas, and transit systems. Cleanup crews and utility workers are actively working to clear debris and restore power.
