(New York, NY) — There are a number of events taking place throughout New York City today to mark Juneteenth. The federal holiday celebrates the day the last of enslaved people were told in 1865 that they were set free, marking the end of slavery. The annual Juneteenth run kicks off in Central Park and goes through what was once called Seneca Village, home to the largest group of free black people in New York City. There’s an African American folklore performance at the Lincoln Center and the annual Broadway Celebrates Juneteenth, a free outdoor concert in Times Square.

Former President Joe Biden is expected in Galveston, Texas today for a Juneteenth event.  It was declared an official federal holiday in 2021.

Americans can expect some closures today for Juneteenth. Banks and the stock market are both closed today. There is no mail delivery from the U.S. Postal Service. Federal offices are closed. Many state employees will be getting a paid day off. Most retailers will be open, but expect many pharmacies to be closed for the holiday.
