(New York, NY) — The New York City Democratic primary for mayor is a week from today. The New York Times gave a soft endorsement to Brad Lander on Monday, and then told readers not to vote for Assemblyman Zoran Mamdani. The board wrote “We do not believe that Mr. Mamdani deserves a spot on New Yorkers’ ballots. His experience is too thin and his agenda reads like a turbocharged version of Mr. de Blasio’s dismaying mayoralty,”
The New York Times editorial board does not like Andrew Cuomo much either. They noted that the former Governor, who’s in first place in the polls, was forced to resign over serious ethics violations.
While the Times isn’t directly endorsing any of the eleven Democratic candidates, it suggested that Brad Lander, who’s polling third, would make a good alternative to Cuomo and Mamdani because he’s a competent and effective manager who has integrity.
On Monday, Mamdani picked another endorsement. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is endorsing the fellow Democrat. In making the announcement, Sanders released a statement saying “We need a new politics and new leadership which is prepared to stand up to powerful corporate interests and fight for the working class.” Mamdani has been polling second to Cuomo in the crowded Democratic primary race. Early voting is underway with primary election day next Tuesday.
