(New York, NY) – A new University of Michigan study suggests that overprotective parents may be fueling teen anxiety and depression. Many parents today are reluctant to give their teens independence—few allow solo outings, travel, or even walks to nearby places.
Experts say this lack of autonomy may stunt emotional growth. Teens need chances to make decisions, take risks, and build confidence. Shielding them too much can do more harm than good.
Parents don’t need to step back completely, but giving teens age-appropriate freedom is key. A little trust can go a long way toward raising emotionally healthy, self assured young adults.
