Amtrak Eyes Ronkonkoma On Long Island

amtrak

(New York, NY)  —  Amtrak is eyeing the Ronkonkoma stop on the Long Island Railroad.  The stop is the western end of the Greenport Branch and also provides access to MacArthur Airport.  Amtrak says it wants to create a stop at Ronkonkoma that would take riders to Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, DC.  Under the proposal, Amtrak would run three trains a day, which would make stops at Hicksville and Jamaica.

Amtrak feels there are more people than you think who would use the service.  While the railroad has been thinking about Long Island for years, the feds would have to approve the plan.  Then, Amtrak would have to coordinate with the LIRR on how to implement it.  However, there is a long way to go before this becomes a reality.  Amtrak would also have to buy a new fleet of trains.
