Helicopters Will Monitor Radiation Over Las Vegas

(Las Vegas, NV) – Helicopters are a common sight in the skies over Las Vegas. Whether being used for police operations or tourist flights, choppers are routinely used in Sin City. Now, the US Department of Energy’s Nuclear Emergency Support Team will being make us of low-flying helicopters in Las Vegas.

The birds will be hovering over the city through 2025 and into 2026 as a safety measure. Equipment onboard the helicopters will measure the area’s base conditions, in order to monitor for a potential nuclear attack. By analyzing the existing background radiation, detailed map can be created.

This is a standard preparation for public health and major events in Vegas. This includes Formula 1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix and New Year’s Eve celebrations. The public will be notified in advance of future mapping flights, so as to reduce alarm.
