(New York, NY) — Summer is a perfect time for parents to think about swim safety for their children. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death with kids aged one-to-four-years-old. Swim instructor Rebecca Weiner, of Aquafiz, tells News 12 Long Island that it’s not to early to start getting kids in the water and that some of her students are just six-months old. She says the sooner a child feels comfortable around water, the better.
Experts say if you have a pool, you should have a fence around it. Other safety measures for children and pools, include never leaving a child alone in or near the water, regardless of their swimming ability. Also, when multiple adults are present, designate one to be responsible for watching children in or near the water and put your cell phones down with your attention towards the pool.
