(Hawthorne, CA) – Brian Wilson, the singer-songwriter, Beach Boys founder, and record producer often called a “genius” — has died. He was 82 years old. A musical innovator who inspired his peers, including Paul McCartney, Wilson created the Beach Boys in Hawthorne, California in 1961.
The group’s original lineup consisted of Brian, as well as his brothers Dennis and Carl Wilson — their cousin Mike Love — and their friend Al Jardine. Brian’s family announced the passing on his website. A cause of death is not immediately clear.
Rolling Stone magazine ranked the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” as the second best pop album of all time. Its release in 1966 reportedly inspired Paul McCartney to create “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” And in turn — “Pet Sounds” had been inspired by Wilson’s appreciation for the Beatles’ “Rubber Soul.” It’s perhaps unsurprising that many referred to Wilson as a “genius” for his creativity and ability as a producer, not to mention his musical abilities.
