(New York, NY) – Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who briefly re-entered politics ahead of the 2020 presidential election — in which he ran for the White House as a Democrat — is backing Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayor’s race. He released a statement making that official on Tuesday night.

Bloomberg praised the former Governor Cuomo’s “experience and government know-how.” He argues that track record makes Cuomo stand above the pack in a crowded Democratic primary race. Bloomberg argues that Cuomo has the skills needed to lead New York City forward.

Cuomo’s opponents quickly criticized the endorsement. Far-left candidate Zohran Mandani argues Bloomberg’s endorsement makes sense, because Cuomo will “keep the broken status quo.” Bloomberg served as mayor and helped the city recover in the wake of the 9-11 attacks. He took over for Mayor Giuliani in 2002 and served until 2013.

Presumed GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa responded to Bloomberg’s endorsement. The Republican Guardian Angels founder referenced the most recent NYC mayoral election, saying: “The last time Bloomberg endorsed Adams over me, we got chaos and corruption. Now he is making the same mistake by endorsing Cuomo, who has brought chaos and corruption to NY State as Governor.”
