Student Journalist Punished for Telling the Truth?

syndication-news-journal-20

(Springfield, PA) – At Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School’s May board meeting, sophomore Abagayle Kane spoke out. Her article concerning academic advisors had been cut from the school newspaper, PA Cyber Press. The piece made mention of the advisor’s recent unionization, something school officials had deemed inappropriate.

But why was Kane’s writing edited? She wanted answers.

Kane, a top writer for the paper, says administrators never explained the removal and instead discouraged her from pursuing the topic. One newspaper advisor resigned, and students say censorship has since gotten even worse. Another article, about a petition to change school software, was also rejected for not promoting a “positive school image”.

School CEO Brian Hayden defended the decision, saying labor issues shouldn’t be covered in school papers to avoid misinformation. Still, Kane and others believe the school is silencing student voices on important issues.
