Sly Stone, the revolutionary musician and dynamic showman who created Sly and the Family Stone has died after a long battle with COPD. Formed in 1966-67, the group had hits like “Family Affair” and “Everyday People”. They were the first major group to include Black and white men and women. He was 82 years old.
A statement from his family reads, “ After a prolonged battle with COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] and other underlying health issues, Sly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his three children, his closest friend and his extended family”.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
