(New York, NY) — They’re back! It’s taken 17 years, but the cicadas or Brood 14, have come out of hiding. You can find cicadas in 14 states, including New York and New Jersey. Dr. Gene Kritsky, a cicada researcher says they dig out of the ground, shed their skins, mate and die. He adds they’re not harmful and don’t bite or carry diseases.
This brood was first seen by Europeans back in 1634 in Plymouth colony. Most people know the insects by their sound, which is a constant hum. Dr. Kritsky says they hum to attract mates.
