(Calverton, NY) — An investigation is underway into what caused a smoky fire early Wednesday (June 4, 2025) at a recycling plant on Long Island.
It broke out at Crown Recycling in Calverton sparking environmental concerns because, according to Riverhead City Councilman Kenneth Rothwell, the facility accepts scrap metal, electronics and even asbestos. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.
People who live within a four-mile radius were told to shut their windows, but that order’s now been lifted. Roads in the area were closed for hours. 250 firefighters responded to the blaze with some still on scene looking for hot spots. Suffolk County Fire Coordinator Rudy Sunderman says once they get the go-ahead and can go into the site, fire marshals will search for the cause.
