(New York, NY) – Could we actually live on Mars? According to Erika DeBendedictis, CEO of Pioneer Labs, the answer is yes. Living on Mars has long been considered science fiction. But with new advancements in Space travel and synthetic biology, it’s starting to look like a future within reach.
“New technology like [SpaceX’s] Starship and synthetic biology have now made it a real possibility,” DeBenedictis said.
Just a few years ago, the idea of humans surviving on another planet seemed impossible. But with companies like SpaceX leading the charge and researchers developing ways to grow food and recycle air in space, the future might be closer than we think.
How would this be possible? The word is terraforming. It involves the artificial creation of atmosphere on a planet like Mars, which currently cannot support life as we know it here on planet earth. Terraforming might mean something like melting the polar ice caps on Mars — creating a warming or greenhouse effect — and encouraging the growth of plants, crops, and eventually oxygen that could support human life.
