(San Diego, CA) — More seniors are using marijuana than ever before. New research out of University of California and NYU, finds a 50 percent increase in Americans 65 and older using all kinds of weed based products. The numbers come as more states legalize marijuana. More women than men told researchers they are getting high. The study found senior citizens with college degrees, and salaries higher than $75,000 were more likely to buy pot and get high. Numbers were higher in states where marijuana is legal.
A study done by the American Medical Association found 1 out of 7 seniors admit to getting high in the last month. Twenty years ago, it was only about 1 in 100.
Seniors say they are using weed to help with aches and pains and to help sleep through the night. Some doctors warn that excessive pot use among seniors could lead to strokes and increased hypertension.
