(New York, NY) – Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are manufactured chemicals. Some people say they are dangerous. These PFAS can be found in our food and even our clothes. But there’s another side to the story — others think the amount of chemicals present in things like food, water, and cooking supplies are too small to cause any risk.
Reports say the effects of PFAS can lead to serious health effects including cancers. Should we be concerned in the Tri-state area? A number of experts identify New York as safe because of strict PFAS rules that have been in place since 2020. Meanwhile, the EPA may delay enforcement deadlines — and even potentially revise standards — for some PFAS compounds at the federal level.
Meanwhile, Blind Bat brewery in Centerport relies on and trusts local tap water. The company has also expressed concern about potential PFAS contamination. Extra filtration is not easily affordable. The breweries’ owner — Paul Dlugoken — remains confident in their products, while using the local water supply for beer, pretzels, and perogies — as he told Newsday recently.
